![]() ![]() ![]() Okay, here we are, Batman: Gotham By Gaslight, the 2018 Elseworlds installment of the DC Animated Original Movie universe based on the 1989 one-shot graphic novel written by Brian Augustyn (a good number of The Flash stories in the 90s), drawn by Mike Mignola ( Hellboy, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, he even did some work on Blade II – shameless plug here) and edited by Mark Waid ( Kingdom Come, Irredeemable, he even did a comic where Spider-Man met Stephen Colbert). He starts running a program to re-establish the link to his own dimension.įox: It might take a while to contact her… And I’ve got just the thing to pass the time… I should be safe here… let’s get that connection with Eva back up… I’m buying.Īs the cops walk away, the camera pans down to Fox hiding under the bridge.įox: Lost ‘em. Come, let’s grab a slice of cake and spot of tea at the pub. Eventually they reach a bridge, but Fox is nowhere to be found.īulldog: Now where’d he go? There’s no way he could have escaped us…ĭachshund: Who knows, who cares? Chap’s gone and that’s the main bit. The cops give chase as Fox hurries through the alleyways. He quickly pulls out a Black Dino Charger and slams it to the ground, creating a cloud of ninja smoke.įox takes off running through an alley as the smoke clears.ĭachshund: Blimey… That dodger’s running off! After him! Which means there’s a ton of ninja movies you also didn’t watch. You can tell the rest of your little tall tale there, what say you?įox: Fellas, fellas! Just because I’m a fox and I’m dressed weird for this time period and I fell out of a portal in the sky doesn’t mean I’m a criminal! Didn’t you guys watch Zootopia? Don’t answer that, of course you didn’t. Just what were you trying to steal there, chap?įox: Nothing! You’ve got to listen to me: I’m from the future…īulldog: Right, and I’m Her Royal Highness!ĭachshund: Alright bloke, we’re going to take a little trip to Scotland Yard. Looks like we’ve got a bloody ganger here…ĭachshund: Awe, and a tod to boot. Neither one look too happy to see Fox.Ĭat: Officer, this degenerate fell from the sky and tore the awning on my shop!įox: Well… yeah, but it was an accident! I’m actually not supposed to be here…īulldog: Could tell as much, given that odd garb yer wearin. Listen sir, I can explain…Ĭat: You can explain to the coppers, you can! Constable!įox: No, no, you don’t need to…Ī pair of old-fashioned cops soon arrive, one a dachshund and the other a bulldog. He looks around to see himself in what appears to be an old-fashioned Victorian town, filled with gaslights and stagecoaches.įox turns around to see a chubby feline storekeeper in front of the building whose awning he bounced off of.Ĭat: What in the bloody blazes are you doing to my shop, ya hooligan?!?įox: What are you talking abou… Oh, I must have done that when I fell. He falls out the other side, bouncing off an awning and screeching against the road as he lands face down in the middle of a street.įox: Oww… Okay, this is pavement, that’s a good sign. His Victorian Batsuit, however, looks high-tech while still being era-appropriate.The story picks up with Fox flying through the vortex again, with more psychedelic color and “Hey, What’s Going On” as he reaches the end. Bruce isn’t fundamentally different from any other Batman iteration, except that he’s depicted as more progressive than other men of his era, which shows in his attitudes toward women and the poor. Leslie Thompkins is a nun who runs an orphanage and provides charity to the poor, and there’s a brief cameo from Pamela Isley (Poison Ivy), who becomes the Ripper’s first onscreen victim.īruce Wayne (voiced by Bruce Greenwood) is always Bruce Wayne ― you can stick a millionaire playboy philanthropist in just about any era, and it’ll work. There are also appearances from the three primary Robins (Dick, Jason, and Tim) as Oliver Twist-like urchins stealing to survive on Gotham’s cruel streets. Some are just as you’d expect: Harvey Dent is the district attorney, and James Gordon is still the police commissioner. The joy of a movie like this is in seeing just what classic Batman characters are like in another universe. ![]()
